Aaron Smith is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research and an Associate Professor of Computing Systems at the University of Edinburgh. Aaron received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin and has 20 years of experience in the research and development of advanced optimizing compilers and novel computer architectures. He was part of the team at UT-Austin that invented Explicit Data Graph Execution (EDGE) architectures and was a founding member of the Catapult project at Microsoft that accelerated Bing web search and Azure networking with reconfigurable computing. Aaron was the General Chair of the 2015 IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Code Generation and Optimization (CGO) and the PC Chair of CGO 2017. His research has been honored with an ASPLOS best paper award, IEEE MICRO Top Picks, and Communications of the ACM Research Highlight. He has over 50 patents pending.
